In recent weeks, classified, secret and top secret documents where posted online in what some intelligence experts are calling the biggest data leak in decades. The materials reveal some of the ways that the USA collects intelligence and it had the capacity to expose united states operatives (read: spies) which could be cause for alarm with our adversaries as well as embarrassment because we have been known to spy on our allies as well. At present, officials admit they are still trying to comprehend the full extent of the leak.
American Media Periscope is already suspicious about this situation because the secret materials came from the Department of Defense which has 3.5 million employees and authorities were able to apprehend the alleged person responsible for the link in just one day. The reason this catches our attention is because the Supreme Court decision in the Dobbs case which overturned Roe vs Wade was leaked almost a year ago and they still have not identified the leak and there are only forty five possible people to look at. There are nine Justices on the court and each has four law clerks. Four clerks multiplied by nine justices means thirty six clerks plus the Justices themselves for a grand total of forty five people and the powers that be still have not been able to plug that leak but somehow managed to find one twenty one year old out of 3.5 million employees.

While the investigation takes place, it is not known if all the documents which were distributed are even authentic. If some are not, it could potentially be very difficult to discern what is real, what is fake and what the intent was in releasing this material. National Security Council John Kirby commented that at least some of the material appears to have been altered which draws into question what the motive is. Most appear to be intelligence briefings that were intended for the ‘Five Eyes’ which is comprised of the US, Canada, New Zealand, Australian and the UK.
Thursday, the FBI arrested a member of the National Guard named Jack Teixeira based upon information from a video game chat. He was a member of a Discord group called Thug Shaker Central which has about twenty five known members including some Russian and Ukrainian nationals. It is claimed that the group formed over a common affection for gaming, guns and all things military. If this seems like an unusual course of events, think of how this will be used to vastly expand the power of the Department of Defense into a surveillance state operation which will now be given authorization to ‘oversee’ (spy) on anyone who plays online games, internet communications, online shoppers and eventually carte blanche to spy on all online activities. After all, it is for our own security. Or, at least that will be the excuse given to massively expand the DoD’s powers.
Little information is being given about exactly what the contents of the documents are but much pertains to the Russia and Ukraine conflict plus the Russian private contractor Wagner Group. One of the few things known is that a collection of maps were included which are believed to have data on Russian positions as well as potential Ukrainian offensive plans. While the scope of the leak was decreed to be a ‘nightmare’ by one source who asked to remain confidential, it was stated that so far the data appears to be less damaging that other leaks by turncoats such as Aldrich Ames.
